The Apprentice Cyber Security & Managed IT Technologist will assist Apexward Technology Ltd in delivering managed IT, cyber security and consultancy services to clients. The role is designed to provide structured, supervised exposure to real technical work across service desk operations, secure configuration, endpoint management, vulnerability management, Cyber Essentials compliance, Microsoft 365 security, documentation, monitoring, reporting and project support.

The apprentice will help maintain client systems securely, support cyber hygiene activities, assist with risk assessments and audits, document technical environments, respond to security alerts under supervision, and contribute to the continuous improvement of client security posture. The apprentice will not be expected to work unsupervised on high-risk changes or major incidents. They will follow documented processes, work within change-control procedures and escalate issues appropriately to senior engineers or consultants.

This role is suitable for someone with a strong interest in technology and cyber security, good attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and a professional attitude when working with client information and systems.

Duties:
  • Assist with managed IT and cyber security service delivery for business clients.
  • Support Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus readiness activities, including evidence gathering, policy checks, secure configuration reviews and renewal preparation.
  • Assist with internal and external vulnerability management, including reviewing scan results, documenting findings, tracking remediation actions and escalating risks.
  • Support endpoint management activities, including device onboarding, patch compliance checks, software deployment and secure configuration reviews.
  • Assist with Microsoft 365 and cloud security tasks, including user access reviews, MFA checks, security policy reviews and backup/recovery evidence.
  • Monitor and triage security alerts under supervision, using agreed procedures and escalation routes.
  • Support incident response activities for non-major incidents, including evidence collection, ticket updates, timeline notes and follow-up actions.
  • Maintain accurate client documentation, asset records, network information, password/credential records and support notes in approved systems.
  • Help prepare client reports, health checks, compliance summaries, vulnerability reports and technical recommendations.
  • Assist with security awareness activities, phishing simulation administration and user guidance.
  • Support technical consultancy projects, including research, discovery, documentation, implementation tasks and testing.
  • Write or adapt simple scripts, templates or automation tasks where appropriate and supervised.
  • Keep up to date with cyber security threats, technology changes, industry best practice and apprenticeship learning requirements.
  • Follow Apexward policies, client confidentiality requirements, data protection obligations, change-control procedures and health and safety guidance.
  • Escalate risks, incidents, safeguarding concerns, technical issues and workload concerns to the line manager or mentor promptly.

Skills required

  • Good general IT skills and confidence using Windows, Microsoft 365, web applications and common productivity tools.
  • Interest in cyber security, managed IT, cloud services, networking and technology problem-solving.
  • Basic understanding of computers, users, passwords, networks, internet services and cyber risks.
  • Good written communication skills for documentation, ticket updates and client notes.
  • Good verbal communication skills and willingness to speak with colleagues, clients and suppliers professionally.
  • Good attention to detail when following checklists, reviewing security findings or documenting technical information.
  • Ability to follow processes, ask questions and escalate when unsure.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage learning alongside day-to-day work.
  • Basic Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams skills.
  • Any previous exposure to Microsoft 365, networking, PowerShell, scripting, cyber security tools, home labs or IT support would be beneficial but is not essential.

Qualifications required

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent.

A successful apprentice will have the opportunity to progress into a permanent technical role within Apexward Technology Ltd. Potential progression routes include Managed Services Engineer, Cyber Security Technologist, Cyber Security Analyst, Technical Consultant, Compliance Consultant or Cyber Security Consultant. As the company grows, the apprentice will be supported in taking on more responsibility across client support, security operations, project delivery, compliance services, and consultancy work.
