Spelling couldn’t be more important when you write your CV. Your CV stands is what stands between you getting and interview and perhaps getting the job or not even getting a second glance.
A spelling mistake is something your future employer could notice quite quickly. When there are lots of candidates to consider any small mistake will stand out. Which could mean you’re not given any interview. You need to make sure you get your CV right with no mistakes to show the employer that you’re proud of your CV and they don’t make any wrong conclusions about you.
What makes this even worse is that graduates are twice as likely to make mistakes as those who did not go on to university!
Although to you a mistake might just seem simple, but it can indicate a number of things to the recruiter:
- You don’t have an eye for detail
- You don’t care
- You lack writing and communication skills
- You don’t strive for perfection
If you can’t take the time to write two pages properly, why should they make the effort to invite you to an interview?
Something as small as a spelling mistake could really hinder your chances of getting that dream apprenticeship. We’ve put together some top tips to try and help you avoid silly mistakes.
Do a draft
Make sure you do a rough draft that has everything in it but can still be adapted and changed as you work through it – you can pull it all together in a second and then a final copy.
Print It
Try printing it out and reading it on paper like your prospective employer will. You may be able to spot mistakes easier when you have a hard copy rather than reading off a screen!
Proof Read it
Let your family and friends go through it and see what they think, another set of eyes always helps.
The Final Draft
Finally, pull all of this information together into a final draft that you will send off, double checking again that everything is as it should be.
